Challenge
Nike FlyEase had already opened the door for more accessible footwear, but the next opportunity was bigger: create Nike’s first adaptive shoe designed from scratch around universal design principles. The goal was to prove that adaptive footwear did not need to feel medical, niche, or compromised. It could create a new footwear experience with mainstream appeal.
Approach
I originated the initial concept and supporting architecture, then built an early hacked prototype from a Nike Roshe. My role on Nike’s furthest-upstream product exploration team was to find opportunities too far out for the rest of the business to tackle, prove them through performance and experience, and build the internal momentum needed to bring them into the broader business. Over multiple years, I helped carry the concept forward alongside a growing cross-functional team of talented and passionate innovators as we refined the aesthetic design, functional architecture, and user experience through repeated prototype and development cycles.
Outcome
Nike Go FlyEase launched publicly in 2021, was named to TIME’s Best Inventions list, and became one of the most visible examples of universal design reaching a global consumer audience.
